During the Assembly of the Cultural District of Violin-Making’s members, that took place on the 28th of February, it was presented the long-lasting training program for the year 2019. Hereafter the main themes included in the program:
The training proposal is destined to the violin-makers who are members of the Cultural District of Violin-Making in Cremona. The meetings are organized as workshops divided in two parts: a theoretical and a practical session. The theoretical part will be dedicated to a specific chemical integrated analysis with an historical overview, followed by a collective debate with the participants to the course. For the practical session, some experimental workshops will be organized, including some practical tests about the themes discussed in the theoretical introduction. At the end of every meeting some didactic materials will be shared with the participants. In order to propose an interesting analysis that can satisfy the requests of the participating violin-makers, it is re-proposed the theme of varnishes. A first cycle of meetings will take place from February to March 2019, a second cycle from May to June.
The enrollment to the sessions of February-March-April and May-June has been closed in order to satisfy the requests arrived in the year 2018.
First cycle of meetings
The oil ligands and the terpenic resins. Experimental reproduction of ancient receipts: materials, procedures and operating conditions from the historical textual sources. Preparation of an historical oil-resin varnish.
Tuesday, February 13th 2019 from 2.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m.
The glues and the protein ligands, the mineral charges. Methods for materials‘ characterization. Reconstruction of the preparation layers: experimental tests, historical textual sources, handicraft tradition, preparation of samples.
Wednesday, February 20th 2019 from 2.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m.
Qualitative and quantitative materials‘ evaluation methods in the varnishing process with oil-resin varnishes.
Saturday, 9th of March 2019 from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.
Place: Face-to-face training sessions and workshops will take place in the Lab of Applied Diagnostics Cr.Forma in Palazzo Fodri, entrance from Corso Matteotti, 17.
Teachers: Marco Malagodi, Arvedi Lab of Non-invesive Diagnostics (UniPv), Claudio Canevari, Milano Civic Violin-making school; Curzio Merlo, Applied Diagnostics Lab Cr.Forma.
Some regular seminars will be organized. The first program of meetings includes 5 appointments about the general themes that are considered interesting by the professional violin-makers: the first and the second are destined to those who have already attended the lessons last year, because they are about a new and different topic that is the measurement of the wood’s speed and the elastic parameters. In the first meeting the elements to be measured are defined and in the second only experiments and measurements will take place. The other 3 meetings will follow the last year’s guidelines, but with innovations concerning the experiments. Moreover, from September, two meetings about the updating of the research in the Acoustic Lab of Poly-technical University in Milano (Violin’s Museum) will be scheduled.

For the year 2019, the Violin’s Museum proposes again the format of the conferences already experimented in 2017 and 2018. The appointments include an analysis on the instruments kept at the Museum and on other instruments for which are established other institutional cooperation with other subjects, for example the network ‘Friends of Stradivari’. The cycle of meetings planned for the year 2019 exploits the opportunity offered by the contemporary presence at the Museum of three instruments by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù dated back to 1734: the violin ‘Principe Doria’, the violin ‘Stauffer’ and the violin ‘Spagnoletti’.
The program includes:
– an historical presentation of the instruments and of the scientific surveys’ results, with presentations of the university workshops and analysis of the making techniques (sessions open to all the students of the Violin-Making School, of the Degree in Conservation and Restoration and of the Master Degree in music and acoustic engineering);
– for single violin-makers members of the Cultural District who will have the opportunity to participate to a meeting (in the afternoon) with the Master Edoardo Zosi, during which the violin-makers will have the possibility to take with them an instrument of theirs and reserve a listening test with Master Zosi;
– performances of the instruments Guarneri del Gesù by the Master Edoardo Zosi. The performances will take place in a day different from the one chosen for the workshops (probably on Sunday) and they will be free for the District’s members.
– like in the year 2018, it will be organized a workshop that will allow the violin-makers (in a group of limited number) to analyze the instruments. For the violin-makers members of the District, the workshop for the direct analysis of the instruments will be scheduled on the day after, exclusively for them.
